The ability to manage emotions, impulses, and behavior is not a personality trait — it is a skill that must be taught, modeled, and practiced.
What Is Self-Regulation?
Self-regulation is the ability to manage your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in ways that help you reach your goals — even when things are hard, frustrating, or overwhelming. It includes being able to pause before reacting, tolerate frustration without falling apart, shift your attention when needed, and return to a calm state after being upset. These are not personality traits that some kids are born with and others aren't. They are skills — and like all skills, they develop gradually through experience, relationship, and intentional practice.
In the classroom, self-regulation shows up in a student's ability to stay focused during a lesson, manage disappointment when they get a wrong answer, wait their turn, and recover from conflict with a peer. When these skills are underdeveloped, students are often mislabeled as defiant, lazy, or unmotivated — when in fact they are dysregulated and need support, not punishment.
Why Self-Regulation Matters for Learning
Research consistently shows that self-regulation skills in early childhood are among the strongest predictors of academic achievement — even stronger than IQ in some studies. A child who can manage their attention, persist through difficulty, and regulate frustration is far better positioned to learn. Conversely, chronic dysregulation consumes cognitive resources, making it nearly impossible to focus, retain information, or engage socially.

What Self-Regulation Looks Like: Three Examples
A student takes a breath before responding
A 4th grader gets a paper back with a lower grade than expected. Instead of crumpling it up or shutting down, she pauses, takes a breath, and asks the teacher what she can do differently next time. That pause — that space between feeling and reacting — is self-regulation in action.
A teen uses a strategy during a conflict
Two students disagree during a group project. One of them, feeling his frustration rising, says 'I need a minute' and steps back before responding. He's recognized his own emotional state and used a strategy to prevent escalation. That's exactly what we're teaching toward.
A young child uses the calm-down corner
A kindergartner is upset that she didn't get the toy she wanted. Instead of a full meltdown, she walks to the calm-down corner, squeezes the stress ball, and looks at the breathing chart. Five minutes later, she's ready to rejoin the group. She didn't do this perfectly — she needed reminders for weeks first — but she got there.
Self-Regulation Across Developmental Stages
Infants rely entirely on caregiver co-regulation. Consistent, responsive caregiving teaches the nervous system what calm feels like and builds the neurological foundation for future self-regulation.
Children begin to use language to manage emotions ('I'm mad') and simple strategies (deep breaths, walking away). Tantrums are normal — they reflect an immature prefrontal cortex, not bad behavior.
Children develop more sophisticated strategies: self-talk, distraction, problem-solving. They can begin to reflect on their emotional states and understand triggers.
The prefrontal cortex is still maturing. Teens experience intense emotions and impulsivity. With support, they can develop robust regulation strategies — but they need explicit teaching, not just consequences.
A Framework for the Classroom: Stop · Breathe · Think · Choose
One of the most effective tools for teaching self-regulation is a simple, memorable four-step framework that students can internalize and use independently.
Stop
Pause before reacting. Notice that you are having a strong feeling. Name it if you can.
Breathe
Take three slow, deep breaths. Breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system and begins to calm the body's stress response.
Think
Ask yourself: What happened? What am I feeling? What do I need right now? What are my choices?
Choose
Select a response that aligns with your values and goals — not just the first impulse. Consider the impact on yourself and others.
Three Ways Teachers Can Model and Encourage Self-Regulation
The most powerful thing we can do is model self-regulation ourselves — and then create the conditions for students to practice it safely.
Narrate your own regulation out loud
This is the single most impactful thing I do. When I feel frustrated or overwhelmed in front of my students, I say it: 'I'm feeling a little stressed right now, so I'm going to take a breath before I respond.' When I make a mistake, I model how to recover: 'I got that wrong — let me try again.' Students learn regulation by watching regulated adults. If we only tell them to calm down without ever showing them what that looks like, we're missing the most powerful teaching moment available to us.
Teach and practice the Stop-Breathe-Think-Choose framework
Give students a concrete, memorable tool they can use in the moment. Introduce the four steps explicitly, practice them during calm times (not just crises), and refer back to them consistently. Post the steps visually in your classroom. When a student is escalating, you can quietly prompt: 'What's step one?' This gives them agency and a pathway — instead of just being told to 'calm down,' they have something to actually do. Over time, the framework becomes internalized.
Create a classroom environment that supports regulation
Self-regulation doesn't happen in a vacuum — it happens in a context. Predictable routines reduce anxiety and free up cognitive resources. A calm-down corner gives students a non-punitive place to reset. Clear, consistent expectations reduce the number of moments that require regulation in the first place. And when we respond to dysregulation with co-regulation — staying calm ourselves, lowering our voice, offering connection before correction — we become the most important regulation tool in the room.
